APY means annual percentage yield. It is made to help you compare what a deposit account may earn over a year, including compounding. That is the good part. The catch is that the advertised APY may need a certain balance, a certain account, or a certain amount of activity.

Make the bank fill these six lines

  • Current APY and whether it can change.
  • Balance needed to open the account.
  • Balance needed to earn that APY.
  • Monthly fee and every way to avoid it.
  • Limits, timing, or fees for moving money out.
  • Federal deposit or share insurance status.

Do not use the “as high as” number unless your balance and activity will really earn it.

APY is not a promise for next year

A savings-account rate is often variable. The bank or credit union can change it. A certificate of deposit may lock a rate for a set term, but then early-withdrawal penalties and renewal rules matter.

Put the fee in dollars

If the account charges a monthly fee, multiply it by twelve. Then compare that annual fee with the interest you expect to earn. A nice APY on a small balance can be eaten whole by a fee.

Pal question: “Show me the exact fee schedule and the exact rule for waiving the monthly fee.”

Check the insurance yourself

FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits at FDIC-insured banks. NCUA share insurance protects eligible deposits at federally insured credit unions. Coverage is generally at least $250,000, but ownership categories and account setup matter.

Use FDIC BankFind or the NCUA locator. A finance app or brand name is not proof that your money sits in an insured deposit account. Ask which bank or credit union actually holds the funds and how pass-through insurance is set up.

Insurance does not cover every thing sold beside a bank account

Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, crypto assets, and many insurance products are not FDIC-insured deposits. A bank can sell or display products that are not deposit accounts. Read the label.

Access is part of the price

An emergency fund should be reachable when the furnace quits. Check transfer times, daily limits, ATM access, holds, and whether an external account must be linked. A slightly higher APY is not helpful if the money takes a week to arrive when you need it Tuesday.

We do not post a “best savings account” list because rates and terms move. Use this list on the account you are actually offered today.
